IOC fears fewer countries could host Winter Olympics in future

Head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach expressed concern about the dwindling number of potential candidates to host the Winter Olympics.

— The commission on future hosts of the Olympic Games presented the preliminary results of two studies. There are 15 National Olympic Committees spread across three continents, which have at least 80% of the facilities needed to host the Games.

By 2040, by tomorrow’s Olympic standards, two of these 15 NOCs will no longer be credible candidates to host the Winter Olympics in February, and five NOCs to host the Paralympics in March. This means that by 2040, only 10 NOCs will be able to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Bach told a news conference after the IOC executive committee meeting in Mumbai.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
