The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has decided to equalize the distance between the men’s and women’s legs of the mixed relay, said Christophe Vassallo, member of the IBU technical committee.
Previously, women had to cover a distance of 6 km, men 7.5 km. From now on, all athletes will run three laps of 2 km.
“We opted for a 2 kilometer circuit for reasons of organizational convenience, because it is difficult to manage the race when you have to control the 2 kilometer and 2.5 kilometer laps at the same time. You can’t see it on TV, but halfway through the race there were signage issues and part of the course wasn’t in use when the women went first, which could be a problem if it there was snow. It’s also a small functional change that allows athletes to recover faster,” Vassallo told Nordic Magazine.
Russian and Belarusian biathletes were suspended from competitions under the auspices of the IBU.
