Norwegian skier disqualified from World Cup for exceeding permitted fluoride content on skis

Norwegian alpine skier Ragnhil Muwinkel was disqualified from the giant slalom competition at the first stage of the World Cup in Sölden, Austria, for exceeding the permitted fluoride content in ski lubricants, TV2 reports.

Silver medalist at the 2018 Olympics in this discipline, Muwinkel, 31, took sixth place after her first attempt.

“All skis were tested after the first attempt, and this pair was the only one with elevated fluoride levels above the threshold.” We therefore had no choice but to disqualify the athlete,” said FIS spokesperson Peter Herold.

According to the television channel, the fluoride content exceeded the authorized limit by 10 times. The athletes’ team said they were at a loss and would investigate; Muwinkel herself could not hold back her tears.

According to the regulations, the use of fluorinated paraffin in the preparation of skis is prohibited from this season.
