Senior coach of the Russian biathlon team Yuri Kaminsky said that against the background of exclusion from international competitions, the organization of competitions within the framework of the International Club Biathlon League would benefit Russian athletes.
Earlier, the head of the Moscow Region Biathlon Federation Alexey Nuzhdov spoke about the creation of the International Club Biathlon League. The first stage of the league will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk on November 18-19. Athletes from Russia and Belarus will take part in the competition, and work is underway to invite biathletes from China and Mongolia.
— In conditions of isolation, a project such as the International Club Biathlon League was born. What do you think of club biathlon in general and in particular of your participation in the competitions in Khanty-Mansiysk on November 18 and 19?
— In general, I have a positive attitude towards all the projects that form our sovereign competitive system and I welcome all these innovations. Here, in my opinion, there is only one drawback: these decisions were made too late. To participate we have to change our plans, even if not significantly, but it turns out we have to get there two or three days early. It’s not critical.
For some athletes, this has benefits. Athletes who represent regions where there are no women will not participate in the first stage of the Russian Cup, so we will still have to carry out control training, so it is good that we are given the opportunity to start. If you find convenient places and do it in advance, it will be better. But I understand that there were force majeure circumstances and the organizers did not immediately agree on everything. We spoke with athletes. We don’t force anyone to participate, everything is optional,” Kaminsky told Metaratings.
Russian and Belarusian biathletes have been suspended from competitions under the auspices of the International Biathlon Union (IBU).
