World champion and Olympic medalist Angelina Golikova returned to competition later than all the leaders of the Russian team. At the beginning of the fall, she suffered from bronchitis and was just beginning to get back into shape. We discussed with her the first results of the season and respect for the work of others.
“After all my adventures, it’s still not easy for me,” says Angelina.
— Physically or mentally too?
I was sick with bronchitis and was treated for a very long time, I started training only in mid-October – I missed 1.5 months of work. Now I’m writing little by little, it’s a shame that everything happened like this. But as is.
— Who are you training with after Sergei Klevchenya left?
— I train with the young versatile athletes from Pronin, and Dmitry Anatolyevich (Dorofeev) advises me. He said that at the moment I was just getting into work so they weren’t expecting any records from me. It just takes time to get in shape. It’s hard after antibiotics.
— It is unlikely that you will go to St. Petersburg for the period of convalescence after bronchitis?
– I won’t take any risks. I will go to Chelyabinsk. Whatever happens to the indoor rinks, I will run. It’s time before the Spartakiad to get in shape. I already ran 300 meters out of five hundred perfectly, ha ha.
— Have you watched the Dutch selection?
– I watched. Well done, you ran well. But they have the same goals and the same perspectives, and we probably have slightly different ones, that’s all. I do not know what to say. Everyone has their own story. Michelle de Jong also ran poorly compared to her team: she was injured and couldn’t qualify well.
There are such periods. I’m also going through a post-illness period now, I need to get through it. Technically, I ran more or less normally in Kolomna, but it’s clear that I don’t have the strength yet.
— How do you cope without the rewards of international competitions?
– Well, what can you do? It’s our sport. You have to promote it first so that people start going there. We have something to promote. We have the best sprinters – I don’t run long distances, forgive me, I come from sprinting myself, so I’m talking about what’s closest. I am happy to train with such great guys who are part of Dmitry Anatolyevich Dorofeev’s group. I am inspired by them – their skating stimulates me as an athlete.
— Would you like to have competitions in the form of a show, like the Zilveren Bal for example?
– Of course, it’s interesting there. Nice image, good lighting. The Russian Cup races are interesting, but there is nothing between them. There is nothing that could interest the viewer. Our long distances are also cool – Sergei Trofimov, Ruslan Zakharov… This is not such a dynamic spectacle as a sprint, but it has its own beauty of races. And this interest must also be maintained among spectators during the races. I would like the graphics to be interesting during the race, so that they are understandable not only for a die-hard fan.
— What are you willing to do yourself to make speed skating popular?
— Like all guys, I tried to show my best results during the international season. And we had serious achievements – victories, records, but there was no interest in our sport. It felt like it was between my fingers. It is now even more difficult to attract attention to our competitions.
Again we have Pasha Kulizhnikov – he is an example for me as an athlete. When in good physical condition, it produces the best results over a long period of time. Ruslan Murashov, Viktor Mushtakov. Natasha Voronina! She had a world record, and you don’t understand whether that’s important to our society or not.
— When Natasha received the Oscar for speed skating, in the broad sense, it almost went unnoticed.
– Yes. And you get lost. Such a cool achievement, so how the hell?
I can explain with my own example. I have traveled a thorny path, overcome many difficulties to achieve results. And I always expect the best results, the best technique from myself. This remains my motivation. I am a fan of my company. It’s not that I expect any special attention. I just want people who work very hard and perform their favorite profession at the highest level – I’m not just talking about sports, all professions, doctors, small businesses – I want them to be appreciated in our country . And so that they themselves do not pay attention to it, just so that their work deserves respect and they feel it. I want these people to be an example.
And in modern society, moreover, all over the world, attention is focused on certain moccasins, for some reason they become an example. And in this context, people who work hard and do it well, who really love their job, lose self-confidence. I think it’s a huge problem.
