European biathlon champion Anev has emerged from medically induced coma, coach says

Former biathlete of the Bulgarian national team Krasimir Anev came out of a medically induced coma, the ex-athlete’s condition is improving, coach Georgy Furtunov said.

On Saturday, media reported that Anev, 36, was in a coma after shooting himself in the stomach on November 1 in Kyustendil, Bulgaria. The former biathlete, retired in 2020, owns a pistol because he serves in the army. Since 2021, Anev has been an instructor and participates in the training of military personnel.

– He’s better now. Krasimir cannot speak because he is intubated, but he responds with gestures. I will not comment on personal things that happened to him. I can only say that a lot of things happened to him. And on a personal, professional (in the army) and sporting level.

You know the scandals with the federation, because of which he retired in 2020, the heart problems, the thigh injury he suffered in 2015… But now he is better and I believe he is will recover. Thank you for the sympathy shown,” Furtunov said, as quoted by Telegraph.

The Sofia prosecutor’s office is considering several versions related to the incident.

— The investigation is in its early stages. Several versions are under development. Investigations are underway and forensic examinations should be ordered,” said Evgenia Deyanova, press secretary of the Sofia District Military Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the Bulgarian publication, the incident is linked to a romantic drama.
