Triple Olympic medalist Edward Latypov said he received messages with words of support from foreign biathletes after the suspension of Russians from competitions under the auspices of the International Biathlon Union (IBU).
“I received messages of support from abroad, and it was important to realize that the best athletes were waiting for us to return. It’s nice to see that we are still friends,” Latypov said, as quoted by the French newspaper. The Dauphiné Libéré .
Another Russian biathlete, Karim Khalili, admitted that if he returned, he could compete for medals at the World Cup.
“Everyone saw our progress in the winter of 2022. “We had great success in the relays, often placing in the top three and began to regularly get on the individual podium. “I believe I am capable of coming back and fighting for victories,” he added.
Russian and Belarusian biathletes were suspended from competitions under the auspices of the IBU in spring 2022. In March, the IOC Executive Committee recommended that international federations, if Russians are admitted to competitions, do so individually, in a neutral status, without participating in team events, and to also exclude the participation of athletes associated with law enforcement.
