The initiative to improve the election of heads of sports federations has been sent for review – Svishchev

The issue of improving the election of heads of All-Russian sports federations was postponed, the proposal was sent for revision, said the head of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and sports Dmitry Svishchev.

The meeting of the working group “Legislative support for the development of physical culture and sport” is held on Monday.

According to Alexander Kotov, executive secretary of the working group, the main problem in the current version of the document on the selection of heads of federations is the link with the Olympic Games.

— The problem of the election of the heads of federations is quite global. The current wording calls for elections every four years, explaining this by Olympic cycles. This edition ran before the Tokyo Games were brought forward a year. Also in the text, there is language that elections must be held within six months of the end of the federation. We are going to propose an exception to the text of this article so that elections do not take place within six months of the end of the Olympics, he said.

During the meeting, some committee members, including a representative of the Ministry of Sports, did not support the initiative.

“Let’s ask to finalize the bill so that it can be considered further in a new version,” Svishchev said.
