Finnish biathlete Daria Virolainen took 35th place in the sprint race of the second stage of the World Cup in Hochfilzen, Austria.
Virolainen, after committing a standing shooting penalty, lost to winner Ingrid Tandrevold of Norway by 1 minute 53.9 seconds. Second place was taken by Swede Elvira Oeberg (1 penalty; +4.9 seconds), Frenchwoman Justine Brezaz-Boucher (1 penalty; +19.7 seconds) took third place.
Virolainen ran his first World Cup race under the Finnish flag. The International Biathlon Union has authorized Virolainen, 34, to represent Finland in international competitions during the 2023/24 season. The athlete has lived with her family in Finland since 2016, but at that time she played for the Russian national team and, as a member of the team, won gold at the 2017 European Championship in singles doubles mixed.
In the men’s sprint, gold and silver were won by Norwegian representatives Tarjei Boe and Sturla Lægreid respectively (0 penalties; +4.9 seconds). The leading trio was completed by the Swede Sebastian Samuelsson (1 penalty, +10.0 seconds).
The KM stage in Hochfilzen will end on December 10.
