Yaroshenko: “When I first arrived at the Christmas race, I was shy next to Bjoerndalen and Poiret”

Double biathlon world champion Dmitry Yaroshenko remembers his first performance at the Christmas race.

The traditional Christmas race will take place on December 28 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, for the 22nd time. Ten teams from nine countries will participate in the competition.

— In 2006, you just entered the World Cup and immediately received an invitation to start. What were your emotions at that moment?

— It’s nice to remember and immerse yourself in this atmosphere. It was a great honor to participate in the Christmas race. Unfortunately, this race began to lose interest among the world leaders in biathlon, but at that time it was a premier event that no one could attend, because only the best, according to the organizers, were retained. I had the chance to participate in 2006 with Anya Bogaliy. Even though we didn’t get the prizes, it was a good feeling.

Then I was still embarrassed to be part of the biathlon elite, even though we were all dining in the same restaurant and at the same table. When I found myself for the first time at a World Cup press conference with the greatest biathletes Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and Raphaël Poiret, I was also very shy, but little by little I got used to it and it’s become a habit. When Anna and I were invited, it was one of the ultimate dreams at the time. A month earlier, I couldn’t even imagine that,” Yaroshenko said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.

Watch the live broadcast of the race on the “Match!” Arena” from 8:10 p.m. (Moscow time), you can also follow the progress of the race on the matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru sites.
