Three-time Russian champion Natalia Shevchenko told that she was flattered by the statements about the country’s top biathlete in 2023, but agreed with them.
Shevchenko won the pursuit race at the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup stage in Raubichi (Belarus) on Saturday. Last season, she won gold three times at the Russian Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk, and in September, at the Russian Summer Championships, the former skier became the first in the relay as part of the team the Sverdlovsk region.
— Many have called you the best biathlete of 2023. Is that flattering?
—To a certain extent, it’s flattering. But I understand that I trained and prepared exactly for this, in order to perform well, to fight at the girls’ level and even higher, so I take this as a matter of course, as respect from them.
— Do you agree with their opinion?
– I agree, yes.
“A few years ago, we couldn’t even imagine this. »
– Yes of course. When I was competing in cross-country skiing, I didn’t think I would want to go to biathlon. It was only last year that such an idea appeared in skiing. I was pushed towards this idea, but I also thought about it myself. “I wanted to try something new,” Shevchenko told .
Shevchenko, who previously competed in cross-country skiing under the name Mekryukov, switched sports in the summer of 2022.
