SBR announced the appearance of a team sprint in the competition program, the first race will take place in Murmansk

President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBR) Viktor Maygurov announced the appearance of a new discipline on the competition program: team sprint.

It is planned that for the first time such a race will take place at the final stage of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup in Murmansk. Each team will be composed of two athletes of the same sex.

— This season, on an experimental basis, the SBR is introducing a new dynamic discipline into its competition program, which will combine elements of sprint and relay. We plan to hold the historic first race at the final stage of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup in Murmansk. This has already been agreed with the Belarusian Biathlon Federation.

— How did you choose the name?

– We had different options, in the end we settled on an analogue of what skiers already have – a team sprint. Here too, each team is made up of two athletes of the same sex,” Maigourov said on the SBR website.

The regulations stipulate that the track on which the team sprint will take place will consist of a circle 1.5 km long. The length of the penalty loop will be 75 m. After completing the prone shot, the first athlete passes the baton to the second representative of the team, who during his step also shoots prone and again passes the baton to the first. Each participant completes a total of four shooting steps (first lying down, then standing, without alternating the types of shooting). After passing the last shooting line, athlete No. 2 completes the final lap and finishes.

Please note that the use of additional ammunition during the team sprint is not permitted. All other rules and procedures applicable to relays apply to this event.

The Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup stage in Murmansk will be held from April 12 to 14. Watch live broadcasts of the competition on the channel, as well as on the matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru websites.
