Bronze medalist at the Biathlon World Championships Nikita Porshnev told that after an unsuccessful run in Khanty-Mansiysk in December, he wasn’t himself anymore, so he blurted out his plans to retire, but men shouldn’t do that.
On December 1, Porshnev took the last place in the sprint of the second stage of the Alfa-Bank Russian Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk. After the race, the 27-year-old biathlete told that he had decided to end his professional career. Later it became known that the athlete would return to competition after a short break.
— At the first stage of the Russian Cup, there were relay races in which I was very sensitive and in which I wanted to compete. But I missed them due to illness and our team performed poorly. I was very worried, especially since we were playing at home. I wanted to go to the start of the personal race because I was motivated for a good result and I didn’t feel any discomfort. Even if the coaches saw that I wasn’t quite ready for these starts. As a result, he requested to be added to the fourth group in order to compete for the high places. Apparently he wanted it so much that he forgot to load the clip of this race. Then everyone saw that I wasn’t myself. I was in a state of great distress. After the race, he gave up without thinking. He announced that he had ended his career.
— How did you come up with the idea of announcing your retirement?
“I love biathlon and I love my family, so I tried to do both here and there. When I had an extremely unsuccessful run, the thought immediately came to my mind that I should return home, because I wanted to be a good father and help my wife raise my daughter. It seems to me that many people underestimate the work of mothers. After a month at home, I realized that getting ready is such a comfortable vacation, where everything is clear and understandable, where you have your own schedule. It’s more difficult with a child and household chores. But, of course, these are pleasant tasks that bring pleasure, so this time I left the house with tears in my eyes.
It’s good that my wife let me go. She herself was worried that I had decided to end everything so abruptly. Set me up. “Come on, Nikit, you haven’t done everything in biathlon yet,” she said. I understand it myself, but as I am a family man, I have always wanted to reconcile career and family. And after that failed race, I panicked. Actually, men don’t do that. Then he joked with the coach: “Yes, it’s all freezing – the brain is frozen, and everything accumulated like that (laughs).” It was difficult to begin to sort everything out. I have let a lot of people down with my actions. I was preparing for the season with the region, the coaches were counting on me, but here I missed almost half of the season because of my stupid mistake, for which I have to pay with the results,” Porshnev told .
The fourth stage of the Alfa-Bank Russian Cup in Izhevsk will take place from January 18 to 21. Watch the live broadcast of the races on the channel, as well as on the websites matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru.
