Dorothea Wierer on retirement: “During the holidays I realized how beautiful life outside of sport is”

Italian tennis player Dorothée Wierer said she realized how wonderful life was outside of professional sports, noting that she had already made a decision about her future career.

Wierer did not participate in the fourth and fifth World Cups in Oberhof and Ruhpolding respectively. This season, the 33-year-old Italian’s personal best result was a 14th place in the pursuit race on the first stage in Östersund.

“Honestly, I realized how wonderful life is outside of sports. Everything was new to me, and I understand everyone who, having left the sport, says they will never return. For me, everything was different. Now I’m trying to get in shape for the World Championships in February. I prefer to focus on the present and we will see what happens in the years to come.

I have already made my choice and only my husband Stefano and I know about it. I made a decision during the break. At the end of the season I’ll tell you everything, but for now I’m not revealing anything. 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.? It will be a huge event and not every athlete will be so lucky. As for my participation, I will not tell you anything for the moment,” quotes Wierer Fondo Italia in reference to an article in Corriere dello Sport.

Wierer is a three-time Olympic bronze medalist, four-time world champion and two-time winner of the Big Crystal Globe.
