This medal was the first for Ukraine at the current tournament and the fourth in the history of the Winter Youth Olympic Games
Ukrainian biathlon team won the first medal at Youth Winter Olympics 2024 in Gangwon, Korea. Managed to get bronze in the women’s sprint Polina Putsko.
The 17-year-old Ukrainian managed to get ahead of two representatives of the Czech Republic in the fight for the podium. Only Slovenian Ella Sever and Italian Carlotta Gautero finished higher than her.
Two more representatives of Ukraine took part in the sprint race. Valeria Sheigas eventually took 12th place, Irina Shevchenko became 23rd.
In addition to the women’s sprint, a similar race among boys also took place on Tuesday, January 23. The best result among Ukrainians was shown by Alexander Bilanenko – 12th place.
Putsko’s medal became the fourth for Ukraine in the entire history of performances at the Winter Youth Olympics and the first in biathlon.
The Winter Youth Olympic Games are held in South Korea from January 19 to February 2, 2024. For biathlon starts, the period from January 20 to 24 is allocated. Ahead in Gangwon are the single and classic mixed relays.
In total, 44 athletes represent Ukraine at these competitions. Please note that representatives of Russia and Belarus are not allowed to attend the Games.
