Former coach of the Belarusian and Bulgarian biathlon teams Nikolai Zakharov died on Monday at the age of 78, Sergei Averyanov, head of the press service of the Russian Biathlon Union, told .
Under his leadership, Ekaterina Dafovska, who today heads the Bulgarian Biathlon Federation, won a gold medal in the individual race at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano.
The specialist worked for the Belarusian national team in the 1990s and 2000s. It was Zakharov who in 2004 suggested Daria Domracheva to change her sports citizenship and join the Belarusian team. As a member of the Belarusian national team, she became a four-time Olympic champion.
Zakharov was born in the village of Uvat, Tyumen region, but has been living in Bulgaria for several years.
