Multiple World Cup winner and European champion Dmitry Malychko told that he did not announce his retirement from biathlon in 2020 because he was completely immersed in his new job.
On Sunday, Malyshko told that after finishing his career as a biathlete, he began building mines.
— Why did you not receive any information (about the end of your career)?
— When everyone was locked at home (because of the pandemic in the 2019/20 season), I thought everything would be better in a month. Initially there was such a thought. But then a month passed, then another, six months. Well, after six months, what was the point of announcing loudly that I was leaving? The new season is already underway and I’m nowhere to be found.
“At least it could have been done for our fans.”
— Maybe, but I already had another job. I completely immersed myself in it and realized that I was outside of the sport.
— So you immediately forgot about the biathlon?
— Maybe not right away, but I didn’t specifically watch the races. I cut it like this.
— So that you don’t have the slightest idea of coming back?
– Yes yes.
— Have you ever regretted it?
— I train, and regularly. I appreciate it, let’s put it that way. But going back, probably not,” Malyshko told .
Malyshko has not competed since the 2019/20 season. In 2014, he took part in the Russian team’s winning relay race at the Sochi Olympics, but after Evgeniy Ustyugov was found guilty of doping, the team’s result was overturned.
