Malinovsky, having completed his sports career, became a pilot and worked in his native Kamchatka. He was at the controls of a helicopter that took off on July 16 on the route Milkovo – Valley of Geysers – Caldera of the Uzon volcano. Later, the helicopter stopped communicating.
