Former head coach of the Russian national biathlon team Valery Polkhovsky in an interview with a correspondent, he regretted the death of the five-time world champion among juniors Igor Malinovsky in a plane crash in Kamchatka.
Malinovsky was at the controls of a helicopter that crashed in Kamchatka on July 16. The Russian Emergencies Ministry said none of the passengers survived. Malinovsky was 25 years old.
– Igor and I crossed paths in various teams, a promising biathlete. Five-time world champion among juniors, and this title is given only by the work and sweat, both of the athlete himself, of the coaches and of the parents. I remember that Igor prepared a lot on his own. Young, ambitious, disagreed with certain positions, had his own opinion. I could devote the summer to working with a personal trainer, and in the winter I proved the right to participate in international competitions and won high places. He always dreamed of the sky, and in the end it won. He graduated from a flight school in Omsk, he really wanted to fly, you could tell he was attracted to aviation. He worked conscientiously, intricately combining biathlon and serious studies with a technical bias. 25 is not an age for a biathlete, maybe he would return to sports and achieve a high goal, but …
I myself have never been to Kamchatka, I cannot imagine what happened there. It’s just a shame that a young, top athlete left so soon. All of Russian biathlon is in mourning,” Polkhovsky told .
Earlier it was reported that the Robinson RA-07350 helicopter, piloted by Malinovsky, took off on July 16 along the Milkovo – Valley of Geysers – Caldera of the Uzon volcano route. Later, the helicopter stopped communicating. On Sunday, the vehicle was found burnt down by Kamchatka rescuers. The Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) has confirmed Malinovsky’s death.
