The Russian Biathlon Union may consider creating a tournament in honor of the late five-time world champion among juniors Igor Malinovsky, RBU chief Viktor Maigurov has said.
Malinovsky, having completed his sports career, became a pilot and worked in his native Kamchatka. He was at the controls of a helicopter that took off on July 16 on the route Milkovo – Valley of Geysers – Caldera of the Uzon volcano. Later, the helicopter stopped communicating. On Sunday, the vehicle was found burnt down by Kamchatka rescuers. The Russian Emergencies Ministry confirmed that none of the passengers survived. Malinovsky was 25 years old.
— We didn’t think of creating such a tournament. Perhaps this idea needs to be implemented somehow, – Maygurov to journalists.
Do you know how the process of investigating what happened is going?
No, no one reports to us. Unfortunately, in Kamchatka such events occur with some frequency. I know how difficult it is to fly there. My deepest condolences to family and friends. We asked the regional partners and the federation to be there. We ordered a crown from the SBR, unfortunately no one could steal it from us.
