Biathlete Garanichev: “I really slammed the door. Thanks to the fans, as well as the haters who constantly spread trash on me.”

Olympic bronze medalist in biathlon Yevgeny Garanichev said that with two victories at the Russian Championship, he had “slammed the door” before ending his career, and also thanked the fans for their support and the haters for their motivation.

On Sunday, the Tyumen region team, which includes Garanichev, won the men’s relay at the Alfa-Bank Russian Biathlon Championship. Earlier, Garanichev and Victoria Slivko won the mixed singles.

– A big farewell! During the warm-up, during the filming, even tears came to my eyes as I passed the stands. Thank you very much to the fans for your support! The fans really create the atmosphere during competitions, they always support us, encourage us, it motivates us as well.

— The tournament turned out to be a family affair for you – you had already been awarded by your parents…

– It’s the best! My parents have always been by my side on this piece. They came from the village to encourage me. Thank you very much for this!

—You won two relay races here. So we can say that you are a team athlete?

“I think so, I slammed the door.” Thanks to my enemies who constantly spread rot on me. I can only say a huge thank you to them.

I started here and I’m finishing my career in the best stadium in the world. I couldn’t let my team down. My colleagues from the team from the Tyumen region gave me a comfortable advantage. All I had to do was fight back and paddle to the finish line, which I did.

— Does your career and such an impressive end constitute a good scenario for a film?

– I think not.

– Do you believe in what is happening to you now?

– Yes. Thanks to the fans, I believe in that, in this atmosphere.

—Is the victory champagne delicious?

– I dont drink. I closed my mouth, it only went into my eyes. Now it hurts my eyes,” reports a correspondent.

Garanichev, 36, previously announced he would retire from biathlon at the end of the season. The athlete competed in the Russian national team starting in the 2010/11 season, making his World Cup debut in 2011 in Anterselva, Italy. In 2014, he won a bronze medal in the individual race at the Olympic Games in Sochi and became a three-time European champion.
