Garanichev, 36, previously announced he would retire from biathlon at the end of the season. On Sunday, as part of the Tyumen region team, he won the men’s relay of the Alfa-Bank Russian Championship. The second place was won by the KhMAO-Yugra-1 team.
– What is the story of the cake? How did you come up with the idea of throwing the cake in his face?
– Actually, the guys invented it, but I took on that role. I said that I wanted to do this because Zhenya would definitely not be offended by me (laughs).
— Where does this composure come from during filming?
“I think he’s relaxed here and enjoying every run and every meter of distance. He did a great job and played like never before, I’m shocked.
— How does he feel at the Russian Championship? How worried was he? Was it important to him?
“He and I were here at a meeting and talked about all this as a joke. But when the races started, things got serious. Evgeny pulled himself together as best he could and showed it. He was just great. I wish our Tyumen team to be the same calm, confident and titled athletes,” Slivko said on .
Garanichev played for the Russian national team starting in the 2010/11 season, making his World Cup debut in 2011 at the Anterselva Stadium, Italy. In 2014, he won a bronze medal in the individual race at the Olympic Games in Sochi and became a three-time European champion.
The relay completed the competitive program of the Tyumen tournament. On April 4 and 5, Uvat will host races of 40 km for men and 30 km for women, where athletes will also compete for the titles of champions of Russia. The stage of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup will take place in Murmansk from April 10 to 15.
