Biathlete Alexander Povarnitsyn told that he asked his teammates to meet Olympic medalist Evgeny Garanichev with champagne and cake at the finish of the Alfa-Bank Russian Championship relay.
On Sunday, Garanichev, a member of the Tyumen region team, won the men’s relay. The 36-year-old biathlete, who announced his retirement from sport at the end of the season, took part in the last stage and finished with the regional flag. After the race, other athletes, coaches, staff and fans held a ceremony at the stadium to honor Garanichev.
— Is Garanichev’s arrival at the relay something legendary?
– That’s for sure. An event where all the circumstances came together! Only luck, fortune and Evgeny’s experience played a role in this result.
— Not a bad script for a movie, eh?
– Yes, yes, that would make a great story.
— Who had the idea of champagne and cake on arrival?
– I will be immodest – for me (laughs). I asked the guys to do such a performance! Evgeny appreciated it.
— It will still be a long time before your career ends, but would you like to end it like this too?
— I think it is impossible to repeat this, because for Tyumen I am a new person. I don’t have the same legendary status as Evgeniy. To get it, you probably had to be here from birth,” Povarnitsyn told .
Garanichev began his biathlon career in 2008, making his World Cup debut in 2011 in Anterselva, Italy. In 2014, he won a bronze medal in the individual race at the Olympic Games in Sochi and became a three-time European champion.
