Before the start of the 2022/23 season, Natalia competed in cross-country skiing under the name Mekryukov. In the 2023/24 season, Shevchenko won the overall ranking of the Alfa-Bank Russian Biathlon Cup.
— The season turned out to be very successful for me, despite a unclear ending. The Russian Championship unfortunately didn’t go very well, but I’m happy with this season. Of the two biathlon seasons, this is the best. And I hope it will be even better.
— This is your second year in biathlon. Have you ever had moments where you arrive after a run and think, “Everything is going great!” At the Spartakiad, then at the championship, etc. » ?
— Yes, I prepared for this season this summer. I understood that I would be among the best. In other words, I was determined to do it. And having such results this season didn’t surprise me much. There have been disastrous races where I shot with a lot of penalties, but little by little I’m starting to get used to the fact that my shooting is going well. But there are still many errors. There are a lot of things to work on. But I was ready for this.
– How did you organize the filming like that? What did Mikhail Shashilov do to you so that in the second year you really became the best in women’s biathlon?
— I must say thank you not only to Mikhail Viktorovich, but also to all the specialists who worked with me, those who first taught me to shoot and then continued to work with me, because everyone gave everything that he could. And it all came together in one result. But hey, a lot of things also depended on me. And here, probably, my head played a big role.
— Do you already feel like a full-fledged star of women’s biathlon?
– Yes of course. There is an awareness, because every time you show up at the start, you already understand in your head that you are fighting for the highest positions, not just to run the race. And that imposes a certain responsibility on you. And you are already working not at 100, but at 200%. Next season I will improve. It’s a lot of work! I hope that next season the results will be even more stable,” Shevchenko said on .
