World champion Ekaterina Yurlova-Perkht said she didn’t want to switch from cross-country skiing to biathlon in 2005 because she planned to become a psychologist.
Yurlova-Perkht announced on Thursday that she would retire from her sports career at the end of the current season. The 39-year-old biathlete will participate in the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup, which will be held in Murmansk from April 12 to 14.
— What is the most important moment in your career that you could highlight?
— The most important thing is probably to win the World Championship. Well, and also the transition from cross-country skiing to biathlon. Then I definitely did not want to turn to biathlon after finishing my career in cross-country skiing: at that time I was studying at St. Petersburg State University at the Faculty of Psychology. When I received an offer to switch to biathlon, I was not active for two months and studied. My family insisted that I try it. I went to a training camp with biathletes so they would leave me alone (laughs). Well, when I arrived, it was love at first sight. It was a revelation to me that it could be so cool here.
— Could the cessation of sport have taken place much earlier?
“Yes, this could have happened in 2005,” reports correspondent Yurlova-Perkht.
Yurlova-Perkht is the individual running world champion (2015), the 2019 World Cup silver medalist in the mass start, and the European pursuit champion (2019). She also won the Biathlon World Cup three times during her career.
