Biathlete Sergei Karyakin said that at the age of 42 he trained once every six months, and coaches upset him when he left for distance.
Karyakin ran a sprint on Friday at the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup stage in Murmansk. The biathlete won silver in the team race and bronze in the relay at the 2005 Russian Championships.
– How often do you train?
– Very rarely with weapons. But before the competition we managed: we trained for about 20 minutes, and then we ran in the official training session. Sometimes I don’t train for six months. I’ll do a biathlon in the summer somewhere, then in the winter. I didn’t prepare specifically for this stage, I didn’t do complex work, I just kept in shape.
— Do you remember who you competed with in 2005 at the Russian Championship?
— There’s not much to remember, many of them are now on the stock market. These are regional coaches, the Russian national team and national team service. I don’t know any of the boys playing now, but I know all the coaches. The last time I raced at the Russian Cup was in 2018, so the guys were already coaching and leading their athletes along the track. In other words, even then it was funny that I was playing. And now six more years have passed. They laugh and annoy me (laughs).
— How many years will you continue to run?
“We’ll see, I’ll still be racing for at least a few more years.”
– What makes you run? Why can’t you become a coach?
“It is possible to move, but I cannot yet find an official job. » My wife works as a coach at school, I would like to help her.
— Does running still bring you pleasure?
— A sort of muscle memory makes you move like you used to, but age lets you know. Each race turns out to be torture: before it was pleasantly difficult, but now we constantly surpass ourselves.
— Do you win anything other than the biathlon?
“I work on the Dynamo line, my main job is there and I play sports in my free time between work and duty,” reports a correspondent, reports Karyakin’s words.
