Biathlete Lydia Zhurauskaite commented for on the change of citizenship from Russia to Lithuanian.
Earlier in July, the official portal for legal information published a decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the admission of several dozen people to citizenship of the Russian Federation and the withdrawal of citizenship from three people, among them Zhurauskaite, 23, who was born and played for the Murmansk region.
– I was invited to the team in May 2020, while the covid was still raging, and nothing was clear about my future sporting future. The team coach contacted me, then I had a conversation with the president of the Lithuanian Biathlon Federation. They found me in the protocols of All-Russian competitions. I just saw a Lithuanian surname. Even then, we started collecting documents, and in March 2021 it became known that I would get citizenship, because it is very difficult to get it in Lithuania. Immediately afterwards I was invited to the training camp and since May 2021 I have already trained with the Lithuanian team.
So the whole talk that I am a traitor, that I fled Russia and left only because there are no prospects here now is complete nonsense. I will even say this: in Lithuania, financially, I receive less than in my region, so it’s not even a question of money. I just wanted to try it myself, especially since they are really interested in me,” Zhurauskaite told .
