On April 7, I climbed the Kirovsk mountain in the last race of the Russian Cup and took off my skis with pleasure. More precisely, Elena Valeryevna Vyalbe herself, who met us at the finish line, helped to untie them – I myself was “not so strong.” Anyway, that was my last moment on skis last season.
Traditionally, skiers went – and some still go – for the so-called “sunset”. This is when you ride in the spring snow after all the competitions, supposedly for your own enjoyment, doing some recovery for a week or two. To those who appreciate it, my respects. In April I can’t look at skis anymore and I won’t miss them until the first snow in October, I checked.
But that absolutely doesn’t mean I stopped working out. This happened to me only once in my career: in 2021, partly for objective reasons, partly because of my own laziness, I practically did not train for ten whole days, but I actively ate my mother’s delicious dishes. When I arrived at the first training camp of the season in early May, Sorin looked at me skeptically, but, being a modern coach, he didn’t say anything. And this is not necessary: a few extra pounds made themselves felt almost instantly and hindered for a whole month. The conclusions were drawn by me.
Each year the rest period after the season became shorter. In general, rest only exists in the sense that there is no strictly prescribed training plan. But all the ski team leaders are still training. Don’t believe the beautiful swimsuit photos taken on the beaches, it’s an illusion! No, their strong, slender bodies are real – an illusion in the sense that the photos were taken during breaks between workouts.
To win our national ski competitions in Russia, you need to train more and more every year – and believe me, these are not just words. Competition continues to intensify, ambitious trainers compete to try to train a new champion. Let me remind you that cash rewards in skiing are a real incentive. Therefore, “we will continue to train ourselves more!” – these are not empty threats from a mentor angered by defeat. This is literally the plan for the season.
And not just for training, but also for thinking about healthy eating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is a nuance here: during the season, when you participate in the World Cup or the Russian Cup, you depend on the opinion of the local hotel cook on nutritional science. And his abilities. Even if our trainers approach management to ask them “less fat, please!” ”, this does not always work. Eat what they give you – at least everything is more or less the same.
In April, skiers and biathletes (mostly female skiers and biathletes) finally have the technical opportunity to put into practice the knowledge about nutrition that you have accumulated for an entire year listening to a fashion blogger. Choosing the type of spinach and the quantity of quinoa to put in it are the questions that concern every professional athlete! In April, they finally move from theoretical to practical. Alas, not for long.
Back to beaches and swimsuits. Do you think skiers will look at the palm trees? Marine aerotherapy combined with immersion in an invisible cloud of phytoncides from conifers is the real reason. Egor Vladimirovich, for example, believes in the benefits of sea trips for his athletes. Look at the results of our training group – not an individual athlete, but a group – and you will see that this is an important factor in success.
How do you train?
Running cross country along park trails wet with sleet, going to the gym every other day. And finally, the long-awaited bike.
Among my friends, it’s impossible to stand out with a car brand or an exotic trip. No one will understand or appreciate it. I’ll tell you what you can: the make of the bike and its body kit.
Unfortunately, a skier’s cycling training during the preparatory season lasts a maximum of one month. So you have to take your favorite carbon horse out of the box almost the day after the ski season ends to add another one. Sometimes too active. I am impressed by the strength of certain muscles of professional cyclists: after a hundred kilometers in the saddle, it is absolutely impossible to walk, it hurts.
By the way, does anyone want to organize a cycle race between skiers and biathletes? In cut-out format, please.
The holidays went unnoticed because most didn’t have one. Pretty soon we’ll be getting together and riding roller skis together or jumping up multi-jump climbs like wild goats. And the ski season is already near. Are you waiting?
