Zakharov – about yellow cards in “skates”: “It will make the fight fairer”

2022 Olympic medalist in speed skating Ruslan Zakharov told that yellow cards can make the fight fairer.

The technical committee of the International Skating Union (ISU) submitted a proposal to the June congress to introduce yellow cards in speed skating. They propose to punish violation of the rules of exceeding distance, unsportsmanlike behavior before and after races during competitions. Yellow cards can also be received not only by athletes, but also by team representatives, for example for refusing to follow the instructions of the competition organizers.

— Unlike figure skating and short track speed skating judges, speed skating judges generally live on light, and this story will make them more focused. Seriously, of course it’s not about stressing out the judges, but about eliminating the flaws, so that no one makes a move. Our team in Beijing would definitely have received a yellow card in Beijing for this incident, I understand that. But again, in the same mass start, it will take the competition to a new level, make the fight even fairer, and people will make more thoughtful decisions.

— During the women’s mass start, half of the participants in the final may receive yellow cards. There are harsh morals there.

“It is quite possible that this will happen in the first two competitions, but then they will slowly get used to the rules and start following them. The ISU has probably already thought of everything. I would like all ISU rules to be clear and aimed at the benefit of the sport,” Zakharov told .
