South Korean Olympic medalist disqualified for drunk driving accident

The South Korea Skating Association (KSU) disqualifies the three-time Olympic medalist Kim Min Seok 18 months for drunk driving, reports the Korea JoongAng Daily.

The incident happened on July 22 at a national training center near Seoul. Kim, 23, along with three teammates, attended short tracker Park Ji Yoon’s birthday party. After that, Kim, drunk, decided to take the other three athletes, but crashed into a fence on the territory of the training complex.

A day later, the car was discovered by a table tennis player. After reporting this to the police, CCTV footage emerged showing four skaters leaving the car after the crash. All participants in the accident were suspended by decision of the KSU for periods ranging from two to 18 months. Kim received the harshest punishment because he was the one driving.

The 23-year-old won bronze medals in the 1500m at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. At the Pyeongchang Games he also won silver with the South Korean team.
