“There is an opportunity to internationalize.” Degtyarev said the Ministry of Sports would support club biathlon

Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Mikhail Degtiarev said his department will support the development of the club biathlon format, as it sees the potential to reach international level.

On Wednesday, the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is hosting a session “Changing the Goalposts of Global Sport. Shaping Our Response.”

— We are seeing a strong club format in biathlon, which is facing opposition from the Russian Biathlon Union (RBR). Can the Ministry of Sports clarify its position on this issue and direct the federation so that there is only one piggy bank? Is this the beginning of the biathlon season? — commentator Dmitry Guberniev asked Degtyarev.

“We don’t even need to direct anyone.” There is a law of the State Duma and several precedents, primarily hockey and rhythmic gymnastics. Here we can only rely on the voice from below. The preparation is there, the formats are there, we will support everything in accordance with the regulations. I am not a supporter of a directive solution to this problem, but we will definitely support it. In addition, there is an opportunity to reach the international level, because no one will forbid other foreign clubs to perform with all the flags, anthems, etc., “the correspondent reports, reporting Degtyarev’s words.

The first International Club Biathlon League Cup was held in November 2023 in Khanty-Mansiysk. Russian and Belarusian biathletes took part in the races. The founders of the league were the Moscow Region Regional Biathlon Club and the Belarusian Biathlon Club. The main goal of the organization is to hold competitions as an alternative to the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Since the clubs are not members of the IBU and RBU, the league’s activities are not under their jurisdiction.
