Biathlete Evgeny Emerkhonov told that working in the group of coach Sergei Bashkirov had a positive effect on his results and that already in the early autumn he felt able to compete on an equal footing with the leaders.
In the pursuit race of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Summer Biathlon Cup, Emerkhonov started eighth, one minute behind. During the race, he ranked among the top three and fought for medals until the final shooting range, where he committed two penalties. As a result, the biathlete moved to eighth position at the finish line.
Last season, Emerkhonov trained with the Russian national team in Yuri Kaminsky’s group. After the national team was divided before the start of the 2024/25 season into a main group and a reserve group, Emerkhonov joined the Bashkirov team.
– Yesterday as today, I feel competitive. I understand that I can fight for the highest places. I hope that things will only improve.
Today I started the first lap, probably too fast, not at my pace, I decided to pick up speed and catch up with the athletes in front. There was just a good group with Anton Babikov, Eduard Latypov and Karim Khalili. After the first lap I realized that I was not at my pace and it was already difficult to chain the following laps.
I believe that working with Sergei Gennadievich Bashkirov is already bearing fruit, because I feel that I can, I can run even better and, of course, shoot. Probably, shooting still does not go well, especially in a standing position. I added it functionally and I can not cope with my condition a little. I hope that in the future I will be better at shooting and even faster with my feet.
— Did your fiancée Lyuba Kalinina’s birthday motivate you? Make you run even faster?
— Yes, I thought about it at one point and I made two mistakes (laughs). I wanted to please too much. But nothing, the main thing is not to criticize yourself, but to look for positive moments, strong points and improve them.
