Svendsen on CAS decision to reject Ustyugov’s appeal: “This is not how you want to receive awards, but a medal is a medal”

Norwegian, four-time Olympic biathlon champion Emil Hegle Svendsen reacted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision to reject Russian Evgeniy Ustyugov’s appeal in the anti-doping rule violation case.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) announced in February 2020 that Ustyugov had been suspended for two years based on data received from a Moscow laboratory. Ustyugov was found guilty of using the banned substance oxandrolone. The athlete’s results from August 27, 2013, until the end of the 2013/2014 season were annulled. As a result, the Russian team was deprived, among other things, of the gold medal at the Sochi Olympics in the relay race, in which the Norwegians took fourth place. Due to Ustyugov’s disqualification, the Norwegian team, for which Svendsen also played, is to receive bronze. On Monday, CAS announced that it had rejected Ustyugov’s appeal.

“This is not how you want to receive awards, but a medal is still a medal.” To be honest, I thought the situation was resolved a few years ago.

—Have you ever received a medal in the mail?

“It probably didn’t happen, I can experience it.”

— What do you think about the fact that this process took so long?

“It is important that this issue is handled properly, so I understand why it took so long,” Svendsen was quoted as saying by TV2.
