“Kulguskin has just reached junior age, so the men’s schedule will be too tough for him” – Bashkirov

Russian national team coach Sergei Bashkirov told that 19-year-old biathlete Leonid Kulguskin will perform in adult competitions during the season if he shows positive dynamics.

In the pursuit race of the summer stage of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup in Krasnoyarsk, Kulguskin gained twenty places and achieved the 21st result at the finish. He became the only one who managed to cross four shooting lines without failure.

— During the season, will Kulguskin compete with adults or in junior competitions?

— Leonid has just reached junior age, so I think the men’s calendar will be too tough for him. We will most likely start the season with the Commonwealth Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, and then he will move on to junior competitions. And as the season progresses, we will look at the dynamics and where the opportunities are. If everything goes well, we will invite you to participate in adult competitions.

“It seems to be one of the rare cases where an athlete, who has only competed in juniors since the first year, makes it to the national team.

— For our team, probably yes, this is an unusual situation. He showed himself well in his youth, that’s why the decision was made to include him in our team’s training,” Bashkirov told .
