Alexander Povarnitsyn: “To be honest, I hoped that Kulguskin would win against me”

Biathlete Alexander Povarnitsyn who finished second in the 20km individual race at the Alfa-Bank Russian Summer Biathlon Championship, told that until recently he thought youngster Leonid Kulguskin would take second place.

Kirill Bazhin won the individual race, Povarnitsyn took second place (three penalties; delay – 15.3 seconds), third – 19-year-old Kulguskin (0; +18.8).

— The main hero of the race was 19-year-old Leonid Kulguskin. What can you say about his result? Have you ever paid attention to it?

— At the beginning of last season, at the Tyumen ice rink, we had a training session with him. He made powerful accelerations with me and Anton Babikov. And then we were really amazed by his speed, he simply trampled us in the mud (smiles).

And then he shot well, and there we missed. He shot longer, that’s because he’s an even younger athlete, they didn’t develop him that much. But he shot well.

I like it when young people like that come. Nobody drags them, they take it themselves and declare themselves. Without any alms from above. We used to be like that, nobody dragged us into the team, nobody was removed from the team for our own good.

— With what thoughts did you watch his end? Yet he could make you move to third place.

– To be honest, I hoped that he would win against me. I understood that from the first part of the distance, until the last climb, he would most likely lose to me and lose badly, because I worked very hard on it. I saw on the show how he climbed the last climb, and it seemed to me that he had finally turned on and should bring me a little more, but apparently he did not succeed, “Povarnitsyn told .

The women’s individual race is taking place right now. Live broadcast on the channel, as well as on the sportbox.ru and matchtv.ru websites.
