Biathlete of the Russian national team Evgeny Emerkhonov told he was happy with his teammate’s result Leonid Kulguskin who finished third in the individual race of the Alfa-Bank Russian Championship in Krasnoyarsk.
Kulguskin, 19, moved from youth to juniors this year. He now trains with the Russian reserve team under Sergei Bashkirov. The team also includes Evgeny Emerkhonov, Daniil Usov, Denis Irodov, Oleg Domichek and Nikita Blinov. On Thursday, Kulguskin became the only biathlete to shoot accurately in the individual race at the Alfa-Bank Russian Summer Championship in Krasnoyarsk. In Saturday’s sprint at the Russian Championship, Emerkhonov posted the third result (+27.9; 2), Kulguskin finished fifth (+39.2; 1).
— Leonid Kulguskin became one of the main heroes of the Krasnoyarsk competition. You train with him in the same team, what can you say about him?
– I am sincerely and very happy for Lenka. He showed the result of a real man, even though he has just moved from youth to juniors. It is obviously very, very strong. But, in principle, judging by the way we trained this summer, and how he withstood the load and in terms of shooting he was one of the best, I understood that with a good shot he would definitely fight for the top 10. On the one hand, for those who accompanied him all summer, this is not so surprising. On the other hand, he is a great guy, he showed everyone that he deserves this place.
— Why do you think he manages to show such results?
— Most likely, it is a combination of talent and work. And now, at competitions, he likes to run. As Babikov said in an interview, Kulguskin came to the senior competition, he wants to show results, but in principle, he competed just to run, that is, to try, to see how it is, to feel it for himself. He did not have any huge goals or objectives. He really enjoyed it.
I understand that in this regard I need to learn from him, because I am more emotional. As for example during the pursuit race. Now I realize that I was not thinking about anything unnecessary, but subconsciously, apparently, it still has an effect: you get to the line and make childish mistakes. We all know how to shoot, in training, at speed, we can make a quick zero. But when you start to be obsessed with the results of competitions, you think about something superfluous and make mistakes.
Lenchik, apparently, wanted to show off his results in the Commonwealth Cup sprint too much and failed, but then calmed down and his results improved. In two races, he made eight to zero. Personally, I have never shot four zeros. When he finished third in the individual race, the whole team watched him. I will not speak for everyone, but I was in a pleasant and sincere shock.
