Evgeny Emerkhonov who won the sprint at the Alfa-Bank Russian Summer Biathlon Championship in Krasnoyarsk, told that during the race he had to change his pole twice.
Petr Paschenko won Saturday’s sprint. He clocked 23 minutes and 56.1 seconds with a penalty in shooting. The second was Nikita Porshnev, who lost to Paschenko by 9.4 seconds (2 penalties). Emerkhonov has the third result (+27.9; 2).
— In Krasnoyarsk, you came close to medals several times. It is clear that he is now in good shape; the long-awaited medal finally came in the sprint. What helped you get into the top 3?
— I wouldn’t say that the form is ideal, since we didn’t qualify for the Commonwealth Cup. Yes, I played very well there with my legs, showed good movement, but I couldn’t get there in shooting. The coaches gave us a task to run for fun at the Commonwealth Cup, but for the Russian Championship, as they said, we should have looked better after running the starts.
Everything went well in the sprint. The third place is a very interesting result for me, especially when you understand that you can fight for the highest positions at some point, but you make mistakes and miss. Today the result was very good, but I missed the last two prone shots because, most likely, I did not orient myself with the wind, which was quite dense – it was constantly blowing from the left, then from the right.
— When you made two mistakes, did you think you could still be in the top three?
— At first, when I started, they took me to Kirill Streltsov. In previous starts I saw that he was not very well prepared with his legs, but today I ran with him in the legs at the cutoffs.
Then I had a small incident. On the farthest climb, the tip of my stick turned around and I climbed the first part of the climb almost without a single stick. Analyst Anatoly Volkov quickly spotted it and I replaced it; before the border, they exchanged it for another one, because it was a little taller.
There I lost 5-7 seconds, and after that moment I was a little overwhelmed by emotions, I thought that the race was not going well, although the whole race was still ahead, and I made two prone mistakes. Of course, I was immediately upset, two misses are too many, given that I have not been on good terms with the speedometer lately. But I quickly came to my senses and realized that I had to work until the end – this is a sprint, anything can happen, the wind at the bend is unpredictable, everyone will make mistakes. And then he worked until the end, until the end.
— Where will you go after the Russian Championship?
— I will return home to Izhevsk, recover, prepare for the next training camp, which will take place in St. Petersburg from October 1. There we will stand on the snow, in a pipe, and slowly roll into it. After St. Petersburg, we have the Seminsky Pass – this is a rolling training camp,” Emerkhonov told .
