Zots: If we sum up the summer competition period, then I would like it to be better

Ukraine won six medals at the Summer World Championships, but the representatives of the adult women’s team were left without awards

Head coach Ukrainian women’s biathlon team Nikolay Zots analyzed the summer performances of his players and also talked about preparations for the winter season.

“Usually, we always consider summer competitions as a preparation stage. However, when athletes go to any start, they still have to show their best. Whether it’s a test training session or a secondary competition – an athlete should strive to show their best. For the summer period, I believe, we did not show all our maximum strength. There are objective reasons for this: first of all, there were losses in our team. To sum it up, I would like to see better.”

“There are not many starts during this period, so we need to remind athletes about competition experience and competition through such tournaments. From a psychological point of view, most athletes did not cope. But you can’t compare how they feel at winter starts and summer ones. I finally saw some moments at the summer championship, but during the preparation I had the opportunity to evaluate everything better.”

“Last season I did not know all the girls’ capabilities. My main principle from the beginning was to see what they can do and what they want. Then it was one thing, and now it is a completely different situation. There is an idea and a completely different training plan. The pre-Olympic season will be extensive, with maximum loads, so that they can be reduced a little during the Olympic season. As for the training plan, holding training camps – everything is being fulfilled one hundred percent today. We have all the opportunities, thanks to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine and the International Federation. I am satisfied with the current state of the athletes, based on their capabilities.”

Let us recall that at the end of August, the Summer Biathlon World Championships took place in Otepää, Estonia. Not a single representative of the adult women’s team managed to win a medal at the tournament. The best results among her colleagues were shown by Kristina Dmitrenko: seventh place in the super sprint and ninth in the mass start.

At the same time, Ukraine won six medals at the Summer World Championships. In the men’s super sprint, Dmytro Pidruchnyi became the champion, and Artem Tishchenko won the silver medal. In the junior sprint, Viktoria Khvostenko and Elena Gorodnaya won silver and bronze, respectively. And Vitaliy Mandzyn won two golds in the sprint and pursuit race among juniors.
