The Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) has issued a statement regarding the proposal of the Executive Committee of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) to extend the suspension of the membership of the RBU and the Belarusian Biathlon Federation (BFB) to the organization.
On Tuesday, the IBU Executive Committee recommended to Congress to extend the suspension of RBU and ESB membership in the organization due to the situation in Ukraine. The Executive Committee believes that the lifting of sanctions is possible if organizations demonstrate a commitment to support and promote the aims and principles of the IBU, in particular, distance themselves from the conflict in Ukraine and do not allow athletes to actively participate to the actions of the Russian army.
— The Russian Biathlon Union stands for civilized and law-driven dispute resolution. Previously, the RBU, with the help of the Russian Olympic Committee, appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne (CAS) the decisions of the IBU on the suspension of Russian athletes and officials from March 1, 2022 and on the suspension of the Russian Biathlon Union team as a whole – from March 28, 2022, as discriminatory on the basis of national grounds and contrary to the constitution of the IBU. Both cases are currently subject to established arbitration proceedings at CAS and have not yet been adjudicated or legally assessed.
We believe that today’s recommendations from the IBU Executive Committee regarding athletes from Russia and Belarus are just as hypocritical and politicized, they also contradict the IBU constitution and are just as detrimental to world biathlon as March decisions. For its part, by September 8, 2022, as proposed to us, the Russian Biathlon Union will prepare a legally justified appeal to all Congress participants and members of the IBU, in which our position will be detailed “, indicates the press release.
On March 2, the IBU suspended Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under the auspices of the organization. On March 29, the IBU suspended the membership of RRF and ESB.
