IBU Recommends Suspension of Biathlon Federations of Russia and Belarus at Congress in September

Federations are offered to clearly distance themselves from the war unleashed by the Russian Federation

International Biathlon Union (IBU) recommended to keep suspension biathlon federations of Russia and Belarus. The issue of extending the sanctions will be considered at the IBU Congress, which will be held in Salzburg on September 15-18.

In addition to the suspension of federations, the IBU proposes that the Congress uphold the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from participating in international competitions until further notice.

The Biathlon Union Executive Board’s proposal requires federations to demonstrate their full commitment to supporting and advancing the goals and principles of the IBU. For example, to clearly distance themselves from the war unleashed in Ukraine by the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus and ensure that none of their athletes or officials belongs to the Russian army and does not take part in hostilities.

Recall that the IBU excluded the federations of Russia and Belarus from among its participants in March 2022 against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion.

Ukraine is resisting the open military aggression of the Russian Federation for the 174th day.
