Russian biathlete Yevgeny Ustiougov will lose his 2010 Olympic gold medal after the rejection of an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a biological passport case, reports the press service of the International Biathlon Union (IBU).
The CAS appellate division upheld the findings of the court’s anti-doping commission, which ruled that Ustyugov violated anti-doping rules based on anomalies identified in his athlete’s biological passport.
In accordance with this decision, Ustyugov was suspended for four years for a period including the Vancouver Olympics. All competitive results obtained by Ustyugov from January 24, 2010 until his retirement at the end of the 2013/2014 season are canceled, including all medals, points and prizes. He would lose his medals from the 2010 Olympics – gold in the mass start and bronze in the men’s relay.
Ustyugov can appeal this decision to the Swiss Federal Court (SFT). However, the IBU statement notes that such appeals are only permitted for narrow procedural reasons.
Previously, Ustyugov was also deprived of the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sochi.
