The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan opened a criminal case for fraud in the construction of a biathlon base in Mirny

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan has opened a criminal investigation for fraud in the construction of a biathlon base in the village of Mirny, reports BUSINESS Online.

According to the source, the Republican Interior Ministry opened a criminal investigation under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud on a particularly large scale”). The maximum penalty under this article is 10 years in prison.

“The necessary investigative actions are underway,” Irina Nizhelskaya, head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan, quotes “BUSINESS Online”.

Earlier in July, the head of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan, Ildar Nugmanov, told about the damage caused to the sports complex by heavy rains. According to the head of the federation, “there were violations of the sewage system during construction, the workers knew about it, but they did it in their own way.” According to BUSINESS Online, employees of the Department of Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan check and find out the details of the construction and repair works of the ski and biathlon complex of Mirny.

According to the description on the website of the Ski Racing and Biathlon Federation of Tatarstan, the construction of a sports complex for training and competitions in cross-country skiing and biathlon in the village of Mirny has been underway since 2019. The facility was expected to be completed in January 2022 and will be used as part of the 2023 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Kazan.
