Belarusian biathlete Dinara Alimbekova said she was happy to receive awards for winning the BET Commonwealth Cup, but that’s not the most important thing.
Alimbekova won the pursuit race of the first stage of the summer biathlon tournament on Saturday, which takes place in Sochi. The Belarusian covered the distance in 29 minutes 51.5 seconds. The second was the Russian Anastasia Shevchenko (+25.5 seconds), bronze was won by her compatriot Tamara Derbusheva (+35.6).
– We were told about the prize money just before leaving for Sochi. There is something in Russian rubles, so I’m not well oriented. I know they don’t give you money right after the race. It is quite a long procedure. I try not to think about it too much. Of course, it is no less important for athletes, we are always happy when hard work is rewarded, but it is not the most important factor. We can say that these are my first earnings in summer competitions, similar tournaments were not paid before. This is the first time for me,” Alimbekova told reporters.
– Of course, the winners are always the ones who get the most attention, so if someone else had won, she would have had the attention of the fans and the press. I take it slowly. I know that’s our job too, because everyone wants to know what’s going on at home. I don’t feel like the most popular here, but it sure is nice,” she added.
