Highly respected and well-known personalities throughout the country have found it necessary to comment on the non-presentation of the Russian Summer Ski Championship races in Tyumen this week. Not aired on large-audience federal television stations.
Of course, I don’t know the details, and I’m not supposed to – I’m an actor, not a director, producer or “distributor” of this show. But as a direct participant and interested person, I will share my opinion with you.
Let’s start with what we honestly admit: in terms of the level of public interest, the summer championship in Tyumen cannot even be compared to the winter stages of the World Cup in which we participated.
is not a charity. They show what attracts viewers. And I was offered to write this column not because I’m white and fluffy, or because I like their “There’s a Subject!” host program. No, solves its problems by cooperating with me. What – the channel management will tell you better. But each month we analyze in detail the quantitative and qualitative indicators of my modest quasi-journalistic work: audience, quotes, etc. Why am I? And besides, as long as the client’s figures are satisfactory, the costs correspond to the results, they cooperate with me. They will stop – they will find another media athlete, maybe a skier – we have a lot of talent. It’s a business and that’s normal.
It’s the same story with the broadcast of ski races on any television channel. If public forecasts are sad, who will show it, why?
Again, I don’t have access to the inner workings, but the famed Nielsen agency regularly releases World Cup race viewing numbers. Russia for the past two seasons, since the return of skiing on , has been in the lead. Under a million spectators, the best races with Bolshunov are under three million “eyes”. Probably, these numbers are suitable for the TV channel, ask.
I estimate the number of real ski racing fans in our country at around 150-200 thousand people. It’s not about those who themselves go skiing on the snow, there are many more of them, fortunately. We are talking about fans, those who are interested in the performance of professionals, discussing results, technique and tactics on forums and social networks. Maybe the number is underestimated: I’m curious to know who are the people who watch “on the same social network with a focus on visual content” the records of our races last season? Some views of the arrival of the relay in Lillehammer there are less than a million and a half in total. Plus, the numbers are growing – people are still revisiting even now, ten months later.
The discs, by the way, are all “pirated” – and I’ll get to that another time.
How many viewers will watch the roller ski races live? In conditions where skis have been practically out of the sports media background since March. Fifty thousand spectators? Hundred? And I also suspect that buying TV rights to the World Cup stage with Bolshunov and Nepryaeva is much cheaper than arranging a TV show yourself.
You can fight as much as you want in the comments of these same social networks, claiming that someone owes someone and even owes someone. But so far, it seems to me, “the numbers do not beat” in any way.
All is lost ? Yes, nothing is missing, I hope that on the contrary, everything is just beginning. Everyone just needs to watch and learn from the best in this sense.
Blink roller skiing and biathlon in Norway are even better watched on TV than the World Cup stages. They had a TV audience record this year, which the organizers told me with pride (yes, I had and still have a good relationship with them). But there, the approach is completely different – they first make a show with elements of competition. They invite those they choose themselves. Klebo is not going – it seems to me that they cannot afford his rider or, more likely, they do not want him. All the other world stars are there, as a rule.
But the point is not the number of Olympic medalists, but the fact that there is not a “departure – arrival – thank you all”, but an action with an artist, long-planned interviews and, above all, pop concerts before and after the races. I can hardly imagine such a thing on the “Pearl of Siberia”.
More importantly, Blink has a budget of more than 20 million crowns, or 125 million rubles, mainly from sponsors of the competition. This package works hard: you give us money and we show you all your logos on a national channel related to your favorite sports stars. By the way, a little secret: the personal sponsors of the Norwegian skiers also insist on their participation and, if possible, victories on Blink. The money goes to publicity through victories. It doesn’t always go smoothly, this year Nortug publicly chastised Norwegian compilations for passivity and misunderstanding, but in general it works.
If we, the athletes, want to be broadcast on a federal channel in Russia, we have to think about how to bring in sponsors who are willing to pay for the organization and the show. My deep conviction is above all the daily work of the athletes themselves.
Colleagues in MMA and tennis manage to make their sport in demand by maintaining the self-interest of the public. And not just among world stars – watch what the handsome guys are playing in the Football Media League! How many world and Olympic champions are there on the teams, remember? But they are watched by a lot more people than cross-country skiing. And it will look if we do not change our attitude towards public relations and the promotion of ourselves, our loved ones.
