Double Olympic fencing champion Sophia the Great believes that the words of the head of the US Olympic Committee about the possible return of Russian athletes to international competitions sound positive.
Earlier, US Olympic Committee President Suzanne Lyons said that “there will inevitably be a desire for athletes in Russia to come back and be part of the competition.”
On Friday, Moscow is hosting a joint meeting of the Athletes’ Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), headed by the Grand, and the Athletes’ Commission of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus.
— How productive was the meeting with Belarusian colleagues?
— We discussed the current situation in world sport, further interactions on future events. We also have the idea of organizing an enlarged forum for athletes. We understood and saw the interest of athletes in various issues – education, career … Many interesting issues concern people. We hear the voice of the athletes and we want to convey it to our sports leaders. And it is important to make our meetings traditional, taking into account the schedule of the athletes and the speakers.
– Recently, the head of the US Olympic Committee said that she could not imagine world sports in the future without Russian athletes. Is this a sign of a thaw in our relationship?
Yes, as ROC Chairman Stanislav Pozdnyakov said yesterday, the dialogue continues both openly and behind the scenes. Such statements sound positive. In the near future, we are waiting for the decisions to be announced,” Velikaya told reporters.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended at the end of February to the federations to prevent Russians and Belarusians from participating in international competitions because of the situation in Ukraine. Many federations followed the recommendations and suspended athletes from both countries.
