“Sanctions pushed us to new competitions, it’s a public holiday” – Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus

The withdrawal of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions allows new tournaments to be held, and competitions are still a vacation, Belarusian Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk told .

Earlier, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended sports federations to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.

— We have a plan to organize joint competitions with the Russians in all sports. For us this is a big plus, as we have never used our base (in Raubichi) on such a scale before. It was empty, and today athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus come to see us. It is a public holiday for people to hold events here. Previously, we did not drive, because they did not give us. Now these sanctions have pushed us to organize competitions,” Kovalchuk told .

This week, the Raubichi are hosting the second leg of the Commonwealth Biathlon Cup.
