“Commonwealth Cup stages are no worse than the Biathlon World Cup” – Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus

Belarusian Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk said that the best biathletes in the world compete at the Commonwealth Cup stages, and the tournament itself is not lower than the World Cup level.

The second stage of the Commonwealth Cup ended on Sunday in Raubichi. The tournament was created for Russian and Belarusian biathletes who were suspended by the IBU from international competitions. On Friday, the organization’s congress extended the suspension.

– I want to congratulate everyone on the sports festival that took place in Raubichi. During three days of competition, we were able to observe the best biathletes in the world. I’m not afraid to say it, because these people are Olympic medalists, world champions. It is the athletes who set the tone for the world of biathlon.

I want to thank the athletes themselves, who showed a wonderful and magnificent fight. The important point of the competition is that we can see talented and young athletes. Perhaps even despite these sanctions, young people have the opportunity to realize themselves and express themselves.

We are looking forward to the starts in the Russian Federation because we all love this sport. I want to say a big thank you to our Russian friends for their participation here, for the organization of the first stage of the World Cup in Sochi… more precisely, the Commonwealth Cup. It was not in vain that I made a reservation, because our competitions are no worse, I’m sure. We have a great future in biathlon, thanks to such competitions we will have new stars,” Kovalchuk said at the closing ceremony of the tournament.
