Russian skiers will be happy to return to the international stage, but the decision of the International Ski Federation (FIS) on this issue will depend on the directive of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the President of the Russian Ski Racing Federation ( FLGR) told Elena Vialbé.
On Thursday, VG released a statement from FIS General Secretary Michel Vion that the return of Russian and Belarusian skiers to the World Cup could take place in December. This decision can be taken after the appropriate recommendation of the IOC. Vion also noted that if allowed, Russian and Belarusian athletes would likely go to neutral status initially.
– Good idea! What can I say ? If they think so, then we will be happy to participate in the World Cup, the World Championship, which will take place this season.
We are in contact with the representatives of the FIS. On September 27, we will go to a meeting, we will meet the President and the Secretary General of the FIS. The best way to communicate is face to face. At the same time, we always hear from the FIS that everything will depend on the decision of the IOC. They will act according to the directive from above.
As for neutral status, if that’s how we played at the last world championship – under the flag of FLGR or FIS, but without signing certain declarations that some other federations promote, then yes, it is possible . But if it will be with the obligation to sign a declaration in which the athletes will indeed have to renounce the country, then this question will not even be considered,” Vyalbe told .
At the end of February, the IOC’s executive committee recommended that federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from taking part in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. Many federations have followed these recommendations.
