FIS says Vion’s words about returning Russian athletes were misinterpreted

Council member of the International Ski Federation (FIS) of Finland Martti Uusitalon said that the words of the organization’s general secretary Michel Vion on the possibility of the return of Russian athletes to international departures in December had been misinterpreted.

At the end of February, the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to compete in events in Ukraine. Many federations followed the recommendations and suspended athletes from both countries.

“Vion’s statements have been clearly misinterpreted. There is no such desire to send Russian and Belarusian athletes back to the World Championships. And there were no discussions on this topic.

In his speech, Michel referred to the declaration of the boss of the IOC, Thomas Bach. It has been stated that at some point the sports world should prepare for the fact that Russians will start performing again on the world sports scene. This is no longer the case. When the time comes, the sport may be the first to be relaxed. But that time has not yet come, and no one in our council has raised this issue,” Ilta-Sanom quotes Uusitalon.
