Finnish and Swedish boxers boycott tournaments in which Russians and Belarusians will participate

The boxing federations of Sweden and Finland are boycotting competitions in which athletes from Russia and Belarus will participate.

On Wednesday, the International Boxing Association (IBA) cleared boxers from Russia and Belarus to debut under the organization’s auspices with the decision taking effect immediately.

I think like most sane people. That it’s a scandal and completely unacceptable,” Swedish Boxing Association head Per-Axel Sjöholm said as quoted by SVT . — We cannot participate in tournaments where Russians and Belarusians are allowed. And, as far as I know, Spain won’t send (boxers) either, most Western European countries are against that.

A statement on the website of the Finnish Boxing Association says Finnish boxers “will not participate in tournaments in which Russian and Belarusian athletes have the right to represent their country.”

At the end of February, the IOC recommended to international federations not to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in tournaments because of the conflict in Ukraine. In late September, IOC boss Thomas Bach said Russian athletes who had walked away from the special operation should be able to compete in a neutral status.
